Nuclear Issues
There are no nuclear-power stations or nuclear materials in Iceland. The use of ionizing radiation is primarily in the health sector. This applies both to analysis and treatment of diseases. There is also some use in industry and the education system, and further still in laboratories. Iceland plays an active role in international cooperation on nuclear issues, because of its irradiation activities and because nuclear safety in neighbouring countries has implications for Iceland's security interests.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) works towards safe and peaceful utilisation of nuclear sciences and technology. The Agency contributes to world peace and security and to the global millennium development goals, i.e. social, economic and environmental progress. IAEA is an inspection authority for monitoring that nuclear materials are not used for the production of weapons.
Iceland is a Member State of IAEA, the Nordic Nuclear Safety Research platform (NKS) and the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA).
