Outer Space
Modern telecommunications and navigation technology are based on satellite systems in outer space, which makes such systems a possible target in armed conflicts. There is growing concern among States around the world that a new arms raise will start in outer space. The technology exists, as examples of sattelite destruction in recent years have shown.
The Outer Space Treaty (OST) of 1967 bans the placement of weapons of mass destruction in outer space. However it does not ban the use of outer space in armed conflicts or the passage of ballistic missiles.
