Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

The threats posed by the spread of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems are sigificant worldwide. Proliferation takes place among states as well as non-state actors. Access to WMD will increase the risk of their use, as was the case in the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88), when chemical weapons were used. Terrorist activity may also lead to the use of WMDs. Easier information access and progress in chemical and biological sciences increase these risks.

The primary international agreements concerning WMD are:

  • NPT-Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
  • Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC)
  • Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).

Iceland supports international cooperation on non-proliferation of WMD and their delivery  systems.
