Iceland and the European Union (EU) consult and cooperate in the areas of foreign policy and security on the basis of the EEA-Agreement, which includes a joint statement made by the Governments of the EU-Member States and the EEA-EFTA-States on political dialogue. The EEA-EFTA-States are invited to accede to certain EU Council's Common Foreign and Security Policy Statements (CFSP) and statements at meetings of international organisations. 

Principal policy documents adopted by the European Council:

• European Security Strategy (2003)
• Strategy against thr proliferation of WMD (2003)
• Strategy to combat illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition (2005)
• European Union Code of Conduct on Arms Exports (1988, rev. 2008/944/CFSP)
• Common Military List (2000, rev. 2010).

Iceland implements the EU code of conduct on Arms Exports and most EU restrictive measures, including arms embargos, adopted by common positions.
