The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)

Disarmament issues are discussed between the Member States of NATO, including conventional weapons, landmines, small arms and light weapons, ammunition, man-portable air-defence systems (MANPADS), and the proliferation of WMD. The organisation assists in developing capacities to protect people in the aftermath of attacks with chemica, biological and nuclear or radiation weapons. 

Among the most  the most significant disarmament conventions that concern Member states is the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE). NATO supports confidence and security building activities, e.g. the so called Vienna Document, which promotes transparency of military matters of the State Parties. The same applies to the Treaty on Open Skies (TOS).     

Not all Member States are parties to the Anti-Personnel Landmine Convention (APLC), but its obligations are respectec by all.  The alliance assists other countries in the destruction of surplus weapons, ammunition and other armaments through the NATO/Partnership for Peace (PfP) Trust Fund mechanism.  

At their summit meeting in Strassbourg/Kehl 3-4 April 2009, the Member States reiterated the importance of disarmament for peace, security and stability. They also reiterated the necessity of making the interests of the alliance in disarmament issues more visible and decided to implement this policy in the future.
