Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)

The Organisaton for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) resulted from conferences on the security of Europe held in the 1970's. Member States of the Organisation number 56 from Europe, Central Asia and North America. The primary objective of the Organisation is to secure timely warning of disputes, avoid armed conflicts, settle disputes and restore normality after hostilities have ended. The Organisation addresses three dimensions of security issues, i.e. the political and military dimension, the economic and environmental dimension, and the human dimension. It addresses disarmament issues, confidence and security building activities, human rights, minority groups issues, democratisation, action plans on police issues, counter-terrorist actions, economic activities, and environmental affairs. Decisions are taken unanimously and are politically, but not legally, binding.
