Negotiations on disarmament and security issues take place within the United Nations. Security and disarmament issues are dealt with by the General Assembly's First Committee. Its resolutions are adopted by the General Assembly. The United Nations Disarmament Committee (UNDC) meets in New York once a year for three weeks for the purpose of addressing disarmament issues and drawing up proposals in that area. All Member States have a seat in the Committee. Negotiations on disarmament issues take place at the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva (UNCD). Sixty-five states attend the Conference. Iceland participates as an observer.
Every year the UN General Assembly adopts about 50 resolutions in the area of disarmament and security issues. Iceland is frequently among their sponsors (see for example: Report on the Activities of the UN 61 General Assembly). In general, Iceland favours transparency in military information exchange, the elimination of all WMD, the conclusion of an arms trade treaty, measures against small arms and light weapons, mines and cluster munitions, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
