International Restrictive and Security Measures
Iceland implements restrictive measures adopted by the UN Security Council, on the basis of Chapter VII (Article 41) of the Charter of the United Nations, for the purpose of maintaining international peace and security and/or of securing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, cf. Article 1 of Act No 93/2008. General provisions on the implementation of international restrictive measures are stipulated in Regulation No 119/2009.
Iceland also implements certain restrictive measures adopted by the European Union (EU). Such decisions are taken on the basis of a Declaration by the EU Member States and the EFTA States on Political Dialogue (see Final Act p. 16) , which is part of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) of 1992.
OSCE, the Organisation for Security and Coopertion in Europe, previously the CSCE, Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, has only taken one decision on restrictive measures still in force, the arms embargo against Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan.
The headings below include links to the relevant web pages of the UN Security Council sanctions committees or the European Union sanctions website as appropriate, which include more detailed information about the restrictive measures. The regulations referred to are in Icelandic.
