International Restrictive and Security Measures

Iceland implements restrictive and security measures adopted by the UN Security Council, on the basis of Article 41 of the Charter of the United Nations, for the purpose of maintaining international peace and security and/or of securing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, cf. Article 1 of Act No 93/2008. General provisions on the implementation of international restrictive measures are set out in Regulation No 119/2009.

Iceland also implements certain restrictive measures applied by the European Union (EU). Such decisions are taken on the basis of a statement made by the Member States of EC and the EFTA-States on a political dialogue, which is a part of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA).
