Mutual interest in strengthening cooperation post Brexit

2.8.2017

Foreign Minister Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson met yesterday with Michael Gove, UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in Reykjavík during his visit to Iceland for meetings with government officials and to visit fisheries businesses that have an affiliation with the UK.

"There is mutual interest in further strengthening cooperation between Iceland and the UK after Brexit and we consider Britain as a highly important ally when it comes to free trade. Britain is now retaking control over its fisheries and we Icelanders are willing and able to share our experiences and knowledge in this important field. For Britain, Iceland is a prime example of a country that chooses to stay outside of the European Union while still maintaining a strong relationship with both the EU and its member states, not least when it comes to free trade. We can therefore share our various experiences and at the same time strengthen our relations with the United Kingdom”, says Foreign Minister Þórðarson.
